Aija is a physical therapist, educator, and former dancer. For the past 12 years she has been working for the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York City. She received her Bachelors in Dance and Political Science from the University of California Santa Barbara and her Masters in Physical Therapy from Hunter College, City University of New York.
In the beginning of her career in 1989, Aija came back to Latvia as a dancer and then for some time she has been teaching dance technique at the State Ballet School in Riga Operetta. Later she’s been working with the students and faculty of the Latvian Pedagogical Institute of Sport and were one of first who introduced Pilates education in Latvia.
Since 1999 New York City has been a base where Aija has been practicing as as a physical therapist and an educator. Aija compares a body to an instrument to communicate, to work, to learn about yourself and the world around. She wants to show how knowing more about breathing and specifically about the muscle of breathing, we can learn to use our bodies, our instruments on a daily basis. Now Aija is back to Latvia and happy to educate people on how important it is to treat your body with respect.
